About Burma Online

Burma Online was a webhosting and capacity-building initiative formed to help those from grassroots Burma groups to achieve an online presence.

Founded in 2008 with start-up assistance from the EU, Irish Aid and VSO, it then continued as a self-sustained and independent project.  Eventually, there were 46 different sites running and being updated by individuals, both on the Thai-Burma border and internationally.  This gave all participants their own voice on the international stage, with the sites cumulatively receiving over six million hits per year.

Unfortunately, in May 2011, it was hit by a deliberate cyber-attack.  This crippled not only all of the associated sites, but several thousand others held by the same host as well.

Subsequently, to protect the security of the groups involved, operations under the Burma Online name were immediately ceased.
